Biography. Afzal Ashraf was senior officer in the British Armed forces with operational experience in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has served in the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and has experience of counterterrorism and all-source information fusion and threat assessment in the UK. A Research Fellowship at St Andrews University’s Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence led to a PhD in Al-Qaeda’s Ideology through Political Myth and Rhetoric. As a Consultant Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute think tank he designed and delivered a course in international diplomacy. He is currently an Associate Professor of International Relations at Nottingham University’s Centre for Conflict, Security and Terrorism. He is a frequent commentator on global TV and the press as well as publishing several articles and Op Edson international affairs and global security.
